We are very fortunate to be
working with Northern Lights Molosser Rescue, as Tara has been taking in and
fostering the South Russian Ovcharkas that are crawling out of the woodwork in
Texas.
She is also fostering 5
of the Caucasian Ovcharka puppies listed below. Given their medical
conditions and total lack of socialization or training, these puppies will be
quite the handful for a while.
For information regarding
these dogs as well as the other molosser breeds Tara rescues, she can be
contacted at NLMolosserRescue@aol.com
On New Year's day, 2008 we had
the pleasure of welcoming 9 eight
month old Caucasian Ovcharka puppies into rescue, along with their approximately
4 year old mother.
They all required evaluation, veterinary care
and spaying/neutering before being available for adoption. Most of them
had a horrific case of demodectic mange, which (Thank God!) is the
non-contagious one, but required more vetting to get rid of. We are
finally able to post pictures of this crew as they do finally look more socially acceptable :-)
Dumor and Henley

Henley |

Henley & Adeline |
| These 15 month
old puppies have not had the easiest time in their lives. They came
into rescue with horrible cases of demodectic mange, were undernourished and
close to feral. They get along wonderfully with other dogs, have left
the livestock (especially the horses) strictly alone and are happiest when
they can run all over the property and check things out while still coming
in for attention. They are excellent watch dogs and have great barks
to warn you of strangers coming too close :-)
Henley
is a relatively friendly dog, but still very leery of strangers. And Dumor is the least desirous of being around people and actually took 7
months to finally decide he would allow me to touch him without going into a
total swivet. |
BISON
| 21 month old Bison came into rescue
because his owners, who had purchased him as a four month old puppy
could no longer control him. And they had rather nasty neighbor
issues, which certainly didn't help things. The breeder told
them that Bison was a Caucasian Ovcharka when in fact, he is a very
lovely Anatolian. He had not met or played
with other dogs, so upon arriving here, the other rescues had to show
him proper greeting etiquette, as well as how to play! After
just about one week, this boy turned into a playing fool :-)
He is, however, very stranger aggressive and must go
to a home with an experienced owner. |

LOLA
MIKKO
- who is now heartworm clear.....yeeha!!!
|
Mikko turned four years old
August, 2007 and this very nice Caucasian has spent entirely too much time
tied out behind his owner's house. Amazingly enough, this has not made him
stupidly aggressive, but he REALLY enjoyed being able to come into our house
and relax :-)
We had our
veterinarian run all the usual tests for a new rescue and were concerned
about his thyroid, as he was somewhat overweight. He turned out to be fine as far as his thyroid
was concerned,
but he was heartworm positive, so he had the dubious pleasure
of undergoing that treatment and is now heartworm clear, has lost weight and
is in much better condition!
He gets along with other
dogs, with cats and is good with people, but is also protective of his
family. He has never been around children, so needs a home with adults only. |

And here I would
like to interject a tale of a dog NOT available for adoption. We were
notified of an 11 month old Caucasian bitch in a southern California shelter.
The wonderful people who usually pull these shelter dogs for us categorically
refused to pull this particular one due to aggression issues.......this had us
puzzled, so we contacted animal control for that area. Apparently the
owners had originally called animal control and told them they had a stray dog
in their yard. By the time the animal control officers arrived
there, they had decided to be honest and admit this was their own dog, but so
aggressive that they were completely unable to control her. And apparently
her aggression is unpredictable and none of the very patient shelter people have
been able to deal with her. This is truly a sad situation and could be
indicative of either a breeder who did not bother to screen new homes or an
import whose new family thought they could handle this breed. In any case,
it is the poor dog who must pay the ultimate price.
DUKE
In his owner's own words:
Duke was born June 4th 2003 in Brooklyn, NY and he comes
from a backyard breeder. He was rescued by us in September 2003 from a
foster home in Brooklyn as a 4 month old puppy.
He currently weighs
100-110 pounds, is neutered and up to date with all shots. His rabies
vaccination expires in February 2010. He has all medical records.
Duke is very well
socialized, good with people (after a proper introduction) and with
non-dominant and submissive dogs. He has all the typical
characteristics
for Ovcharkas : smart,
stubborn, protective, calm and alert. We traveled with him everywhere so
he was exposed to a different environment, different people and animals.
He is a typical livestock guard dog and the perfect environment for
him would be a large farm
where he could be outside 24/7 and guard the property. He cannot be
chained or locked in a small area. We could not train him to use a
crate. He is very well leash trained and walks calmly next to the owner.
The reason for this
rescue is that we have another 100lbs male dog (mix of Doberman,
Rottweiler and maybe GS) name Brutus. Brutus is a real sweetheart and a
typical house pet. Duke (CAO) provokes fights from time to time and every
6 months they have a really nasty fight. But the main reason why we need
to give up Duke is that we have 14 months old baby boy that we are afraid
of that one day we will get in the middle of two fighting dogs. I do not
want to take another chance. Also I do not want Brutus to get hurt
again. We love Duke very much and want the best for him. We have to make
sure that we will end up in good hands with someone understanding
characteristics of this breed.
|

His owners
do not wish to put Duke on a plane to go to a new home, so we're
hoping we can find a new home for him somewhere on the east
coast (he is currently in New Jersey) or we need someone who
wants to take a long drive :-))

BOBY
ALMABEAR
| AlmaBear is a
4 year
Caucasian/Central Asian mix who is in need of a new home. She does
very well with her family, including children, but is very territorial and
standoffish with strangers.
She originally shared her
play time with Mishka, Archer and Mikko and is now romping with a couple of
Tibetan Mastiffs!
She can apparently be aggressive toward other dogs, but has been anything
but since arriving here. Although in the photo below right JR, who is a 2
year old TM puppy was continuously trying to express his affection for her,
to the point she was ready to
kill him :-)
This very pretty girl needs a home with an experienced
owner and a firm hand and one who will treasure her protective
instincts, her superb sense of humor and her cuddliness with her family. |
 |
Nagene
Cheyenne
 |
Cheyenne
is a 3 1/2 year old Caucasian/Central Asian mix that has been
with one owner since she was a puppy. She weighs approximately
80-85 pounds
She likes to go
for long walks and likes having her belly scratched. She can be
dominant with other dogs and ideally needs a home with no other dogs.
Although she was raised with three other dogs, she seems to be taking
some exception to them at this point. :-)
She needs an owner
who can be firm and train her properly and who will enjoy the outdoors
as much as she does. |
